CHAPTER 10
Hal parked his bike next to Harperâs piece of shit car and killed the engine. He got off the bike and set his helmet on the seat before glancing at the sky. It was a beautiful October day, and the decision to take his bike to Warrenâs was easy. He wouldnât have much longer to ride the bike before the snow fell, and heâd take advantage of every opportunity he could.
He studied the extra helmet strapped to the back seat. He hadnât put the helmet on there this morning for any particular reason. It certainly wasnât because he wanted to be prepared if Savina wanted to ride. He wasnât stupid. Heâd seen the disappointment on her face when he didnât take her home on the bike the night of her disastrous date at the Beaver.
About six months after Alan died, sheâd been having a terrible day and desperate to help her manage her grief, Hal had suggested a bike ride. Savina had never been on a motorcycle before, but sheâd been instantly hooked after just one ride.
He pulled off his gloves and set them next to his helmet. Heâd taken her on plenty of rides over the following two years, just as delighted as Savina was at how much sheâd loved it. Mary had tolerated the bike riding, but it had never been her thing, and he could count on one hand the number of times heâd gotten her on the back of his bike.
The bike rides with Savina had been just one of many things heâd missed the last year. He rubbed the back of his neck and made his way past the multiple vehicles parked in the driveway of Warrenâs house. He didnât see Savinaâs truck and worry rocketed through him. She was supposed to be here. Had something happened to her?
The front door opened, and Savina appeared carrying a large cardboard box. She wore her usual t-shirt and jeans, with her hair in a high ponytail. As she carefully walked up the ramp into the U-Haul parked near the front door, Hal leaned against Warrenâs SUV. The rapid beating of his heart could only partially be blamed on his relief that she was okay.
Shit, this was gonna be harder than he thought.
Just donât make it weird.
He grimaced. Savina had already made it weird by sneaking out of his apartment sometime between when theyâd fallen asleep and when Hal woke at his usual six thirty. He grimaced and scrubbed his hand over his face, ignoring his instinct to duck behind the SUV when Savina came out of the U-Haul.
To his relief, she didnât look his way, just continued into the house. He studied her perfect ass, hating that it made him half-hard even though he knew heâd never be with her again.
He wouldnât say that last night had been a mistake, being with Savina had been everything heâd ever dreamed it could be, but the guilt he felt was a heavy weight that felt impossible to carry.
